We are a Canadian company that designs and manufactures advanced personal protective equipment for military, law enforcement, industry and healthcare professionals.
We work closely with end-users, regulatory bodies, and strategic partners to bring, high-performance, industry driven and customer specific protection to market.
It started in March of 2020
Win-Shield Devices was established in March 2020 in response to the urgent need for adequate protection during the COVID-19 pandemic. Rob Ranson, who was then serving as a managing director leading a team of medical professionals, observed that frontline staff, including his own daughter, were required to treat patients without sufficient protection. The existing personal protective equipment (PPE) was not designed to effectively defend against airborne viruses such as COVID-19.
Rob quickly created a C-Shield prototype in 72 hours. Hospital staff saw its value and requested more shields. In just five weeks, demand skyrocketed to millions, leading to the founding of Win-Shield Devices with the goal to protect all workers.
From our Hands to the Front Lines
Each day, thousands of head shields were packaged by hand and boxed for delivery. Once complete, pallets were sent to a central warehouse for final distribution. From there, they were delivered to hospitals, clinics, long-term care homes, correctional facilities, and COVID-19 testing sites across the province - protecting the people who needed it most.
Scaling Up in Record Time
Within a matter of weeks, Win-Shield received an emergency order from a provincial government for four million face shields. In response, our startup scaled at an unprecedented pace. Within six months, we had established two production facilities in Winnipeg, hired more than 37 staff, and began running day and night shifts to meet demand.
Expanding the Mission
After the initial crisis subsided and all face shields were delivered, our team addressed other protection challenges. We started designing new respiratory devices for military, law enforcement, industrial, and emergency response applications.
In 2021, we were chosen from over 20 companies across Canada to participate in a six-month Phase 1 challenge where we developed a prototype for an inclusive respirator for the Government of Canada Law Enforcement agencies. In Q4, 2023, out of the 4 shortlisted companies selected for Phase 1, we were awarded a Phase 2 contract to commercialize our patent-pending device.
Our focus on innovation, design, and application continues to advance Win-Shield Devices forward today.
